60 days on Ubuntu and my thoughts
A new user gives his impression after two months of use with Ubuntu. For all the new Linux users out there this is an interesting read since you may share some of the same sentiments as the author. Personally, I love reading articles like this because it makes me think back to the days when I first started on Linux. Linux has come a very, very long way in just four short years. On my first Linux desktop, it would take me a full day to figure out how to play .MP3, .MPEG, get flash going, hibernate the computer, etc. It seems like these tasks are coming much easier for the new Linux users. I realize that Linux has a learning curve, but as someone who is proficient in Windows, Mac, and Linux I believe I am in a unique position to understand the strengths and fallacies of all three operating systems. There is one reason that I stay with Linux, and that is the resistant-free computing environment. What I consistently find in Mac OS X and Windows Vista/XP is that there are baked in road-blocks. What I mean is that there are various aspects of each operating system that could be more user-centric, but I feel that the developers leave certain aspects out of their software to leave the door open for other companies to make money. For instance, there is no reason (in my opinion) why Finder in Mac shouldn’t only have read-access to FTP. For example, Nautilus in Gnome has read and write functionality. Additionally, there is no reason that the Windows partition tool should only be able to partition into FAT and NTFS. These simple roadblocks inevitably lead users to purchase third party software. I’m sure there are thousands of other examples, those were just the first few that came to mind. Anyway, you’ll see me on Linux for a very long time.
