BMPx - My new favourite music player

I just installed BMPx and I am thoroughly impressed. It has last.fm support, podcast support, shoutcast & icecast, and of course it plays your music. This has won me over from my previous favourite music player, Muine, with it’s support for all things streaming. As with all the good programs development is still ongoing with […]

Deluge - BitTorrent client

I have never been happy with the BitTorrent clients for linux. They all seemed too bloated or to minimal. Then I came across Deluge. This is the best client I have tried to date. Although it is missing a few features it is being developed quickly and we can expect to see them soon.
Happy torrenting,
George […]

Swiftfox - optimised firefox

If you have ever felt that Firefox is a bit sluggish and other browsers lack features you need then swiftfox may be the answer!
Swiftfox provides Firefox builds optimized for your CPU to save you the hassle of compiling from source. I tried this a long time ago and saw no noticeable speed improvements, however a […]

Glom: Easy databases

Glom is a superb database tool. It can be used to create easy to use databases very quickly. Not only do you have great control over the tables but you also get good control over the user interface. Imagine Access but usable.

LyX: Makes writing easy

LyX is essentially a word processor, however it has less emphasis on formating and more emphasis on writing. But hold on, ‘I don’t want ugly documents’ I hear you cry!
LyX can remove the problems of formatting through the magical power of LaTeX. So what is LaTeX? In a nutshell by giving simple formating e.g. Title, […]

Pause for thought: Linux hardware support

Next time you are told that linux has terrible hardware support compared to windows stop and think about it.
Remember the last piece of hardware you installed under windows. It most likely involved installing 3rd party drivers, often with unavoidable 3rd party software, then restarting, then plugging in your hardware, then often one more restart for […]

Beryl svn Ubuntu packages

I stumbled across these packages earlier. They seem to be allot snappier than the official packages, with a few plugins and effects thrown in as well. Remember to add his gpg key by following the instructions on the front page.
Nothing beats watching your applications incinerate as they minimize.
Happy Beryl-ing,

Always remember personal preference

Linux is all about personal preference. If you do not like one tool you can use another. If you don’t like any of them you can add features to existing tools, all through the power of open source.
That is why there are so many distributions of Linux in existence. If people don’t like an existing […]

Beryl Project

The Beryl Project is a community fork of Compiz. If you don’t know what compiz is it essentially lets you use neat effects on your desktop eg. windows wobble when moved, transparency, etc.
More interestingly the latest nvidia beta drivers work with Beryl with no need for XGL or AIGLX, which means that I can still […]

‘Why is linux better?’

If, like myself, you have been asked this before you will realise it isn’t the easiest of things to answer. For a start you have previous beliefs to battle with, like everything needs to be done from the console. Doesn’t sound very believable that you prefer the CLI. Mostly ears will quickly close and eyes […]
