13 applications to install on an old computer
If you’ve got an old computer sitting around (I’m talking really old) then don’t rule Linux out. Unfortunately, most of the common Linux distributions (Ubuntu, Knoppix, Red Hat, Fedora, etc.) are too bloated to work on computers with very little RAM and/or a very slow processor. The Linux on Desktop weblog lists 13 applications that you can substitute so that you can take that really old computer out of retirement and turn it into a useful Linux computer. The following are the 13 applications recommended by Linux on Desktop.
1. Gnumeric
2. Thunar
3. aDesklets
4. XPDF & ePDFview
5. XMMS
6. Abiword
7. mpg123
8. Xubuntu-Desktop
9. Epiphany
10. Meta Tracker
11. Multimedia Codecs
12. Downloader for X
13. PCMan File Manager
I had never used most of these applications so I enjoyed the article very much. Linux on Desktop gives great detail about what you can use each of these applications for and how to install them.
